The Leixlip United girls teams were proud tonight as they raised their recently earned 20x20 flag. Leixlip United is committed to further developing the sport amongst our female members and welcomes the 20x20 challenge.
The 20x20 Initiative aims to create a cultural shift in our perception of girls and women in sport. There is so much to celebrate when it comes to women’s sport in Ireland, but there isn’t enough noise. 20x20 is making some noise because if she can’t see it, she can’t be it https://20x20.ie/
20×20 has three targets to reach by the end of 2020:
- 20% more media coverage of women in sport
- 20% more female participation at player, coach, referee & administrative level
- 20% more attendance at women’s games and events
"We’re very grateful to receive this 20x20 award as recognition of the importance of girls and ladies football at Leixlip United. As manager of the under 15 girls, I’ve seen the team grow and strengthen in the last few years, the confidence the girls get from football is fantastic. I’ve seen girls who were strangers initially become great friends through football, it’s great to see. 20x20 lets the girls see that there are long term opportunities to keep playing sport, when maybe in the past girls drifted away in their teenage years – we have 2 senior ladies teams here at the club and the girls really benefit from having those role models at the club.
I hope 20x20 will promote awareness of our efforts at Leixlip United to have the girls section as a strong part of what we do here – our secondary school age teams are thriving, but we’re really hoping to get more girls from primary school age involved – the earlier the girls start playing football, the better. We’re hoping to start a team for 8 year olds this year and we’re always looking for new players from 9 to 12 years old" Paul Carey, U15s Manager
If your daughter, sister, niece or friend is interested in playing soccer, (born 2008 and younger) please tell her she is welcome to come along to our training sessions and try out a team sport in a fun and safe environment.
